Which organisations are inspected?

A wide range of organisations is inspected including:

  • pre-school centres, including nursery schools and classes;
  • primary, post-primary and special schools;
  • independent schools for registration and re-registration;
  • colleges of further and higher education;
  • supplier organisations of training and employment programmes;
  • the youth and community sector;
  • Initial Teacher Education organisations;
  • the Curriculum Advisory and Support Service (CASS) of the Education and Library Boards (ELBs)
  • the Northern Ireland Council for the Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment (CCEA);
  • educational support services, including educational welfare, the educational psychology services, and the peripatetic outreach services.

As well as inspecting individual organisations, the content and nature of the inspection programme takes account of initiatives which the Government has introduced.  In addition, the inspection programme is designed or adjusted to provide evidence on issues about which the Departments, DE, DCAL and DEL, and their Ministers require particular advice.
