Leadership, Inspection and School Effectiveness Conferences

As part of a series of ‘Leadership and Management’ issues events designed for school principals, the Regional Training Unit (RTU) organised one Post Primary and two Primary conferences in February/March 2011, on ‘Leadership, Inspection and School Effectiveness.’

Dates and Venues

  • 22nd February 2011    La Mon House Hotel, Comber (Post-Primary)
  • 21st March 2011    Clandeboye Lodge, Bangor (Primary)
  • 28th March 2011   Glenavon Hotel, Cookstown (Primary)

The rationale for the conferences which were oversubscribed, was to showcase, discuss and reflect upon how school leaders can make effective and sustainable improvement to extend and enhance outcomes for all children and young people. There was a specific focus on improving standards and pupil achievement to attain a high performance culture in schools.  The characteristics and qualities of school leadership and management shown to be the most effective in raising standards and pupil achievement, as emerging from research and the key findings of the 2008-10 Chief Inspector’s Report, were also considered by conference delegates.

Principals, Vice-principals and teachers recognised through recent inspection activity in terms of highly effective practice led a series of school-based workshops at each of the conferences. Major Inputs were also provided by the Education and Training Inspectorate and RTU.
