ETI publishes two evaluations of special educational needs and/or disabilities provision in further education

Date published: 03 August 2026

Organisational phase: Further Education

The Department for the Economy commissioned the Education and Training Inspectorate (ETI) to evaluate the effectiveness of provision for learners with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEN/D) across Northern Ireland's further education sector. The findings will inform the Department's policy development for further education SEN/D provision and support the Economy Minister's commitment to improving access, progression and outcomes for learners with SEN/D.

Both evaluations highlight the strong commitment of college leaders and staff to inclusive practice, positive learner experiences and effective teaching across the sector. They also identify opportunities to strengthen learners' experiences and outcomes through improved post-school transition arrangements, timely information sharing, more consistent use of learner outcome data and stronger strategic planning to support equitable, sustainable and regionally consistent provision across Northern Ireland's further education sector.

Evaluation of the discrete provision for learners with SEN/D

This evaluation considers how effectively specialist discrete provisions within further education, alongside wider education system arrangements, support learners with SEN/D in their transition to adulthood.

Evaluation of support provision in mainstream further education (FE)
