In 2011, the Department of the Environment (DOE) launched a new road safety strategy for Northern Ireland, ‘Northern Ireland’s Road Safety Strategy to 2020’ with 199 cross-departmental action measures and four key targets for the reduction in the number of deaths and serious injuries caused on Northern Ireland’s roads.

To assist in achieving these challenging targets, the road safety education provision within schools has a crucial role in developing children and young people’s attitudes and behaviours to become safer road users, as children and as adults in later life. Consequently, within the strategy there are a number of action measures to improve further the road safety education provision in schools. During the period April to June 2011, all primary and post-primary schools across Northern Ireland were invited to participate in a survey via an online questionnaire.
