Inspection Summary Report - March 2025

Mossgrove Primary School and Nursery Unit has a clear set of values and a well‑embedded vision that is lived out and supports effectively the children’s holistic development.
The school’s self-evaluation processes are effective, drawing meaningfully on feedback from the whole-school community to inform school improvement priorities. Appropriately the school is re-establishing a more collaborative approach to school improvement with clearly defined roles and responsibilities, as the staff team continues to grow and develop.
The detailed planning in most curricular areas underpins clear progression and meaningful connected learning with a strong focus on the children’s skills development.
The children enjoy their learning. Their lessons are well paced, informed by the children’s interests, and have appropriate challenge and meaningful opportunities for paired and group work.
The children use digital technology well across the curriculum and are supported by coherent planning for progression. Online safety is prioritised appropriately.
In the nursery unit, the children are happy and develop well their confidence and independence. The well-planned learning opportunities contribute effectively to their early language, emerging writing skills and early mathematical understanding.
The children are encouraged to develop understanding, empathy and respect for others. This is evident in their thoughtful engagement with, and positive responses to, learning experiences across the curriculum, and is reflected in their respectful attitudes towards the views and perspectives of others.
The children display consistently positive dispositions for learning; they are motivated, considerate, and engage confidently and enthusiastically in their learning.
The revised approach to planning for children with special educational needs (SEN), through the graduated response framework, is strengthening the provision across the school. Ongoing staff professional learning for SEN remains an appropriate priority as the staff team continues to develop.
The children, including those with SEN, are supported well in their classrooms through the effective use of appropriate strategies aligned to their individual needs. The school reports that the internal assessment data shows that the children are making good progress.
A celebration of the children’s work, including their artwork, is displayed attractively throughout the school and demonstrates the children’s creative and expressive skills which are developing well. Within the classroom, the children take great pride in presenting their work in books.
The school benefits from strong parental partnerships and a wide range of community links, which broaden the children’s learning experiences and support their academic progress.
At the time of the inspection, the evidence provided by the school demonstrates that the arrangements for child protection align to the current statutory guidance.

Next steps

Mossgrove Primary School and Nursery Unit provides a welcoming and inclusive environment guided by a clear vision of a school that is Learning, Caring, Achieving. The vision is well embedded and is clearly shaping implementation of improvement work across the school. The children are proud of their school, enjoy their experiences, and are making progress in learning.

The inspection has identified an area for action to enable Mossgrove Primary School and Nursery Unit to achieve its vision more fully and which reflects the school’s ongoing improvement work: to re-establish the collaborative approach to school improvement, with clearly defined roles and responsibilities within a more distributed leadership structure.

The District Inspector will monitor the school’s progress in addressing the area for action as part of ETI’s routine monitoring processes.
